  1. Bob Turnbull says:

Wow…Moen, your picks and my picks differed in only three categories – Live Action Short (which you got right), Sound Editing (which I got right) and Supporting Actress (which neither of us got – I thought the love for Cate would spill over here).

My score of 14 got me second place in our friend’s pool (the winner had 16).

I’m a bit bummer by Tutli-Putli’s loss (“Peter And The Wold”? OK, I’m sure it’s a fine film, but those clips didn’t even come close to the quality of Tutli-Putli. Not to mention going with a tried and true story that’s been done hundreds of times already…), but otherwise I didn’t mind any of the picks.

And Marion Cotillard is really gorgeous.

  2. Moen Mohamed says:

Hi Bob, it seems we scored the same – 14. The winner in your pool definitely scored well. 16/24 is excellent. I was disappointed with the MADAME TUTLI-PUTLI loss, you are right, based on the clips of the films in this category, this film was far ahead in terms of quality.

Twice I jumped for joy during the show and that was for Marion Cotillard and Tilda Swinton. I didn’t think either would win, but they both deserved to, and were the best among the nominated actresses.

I would have been happy if Tamara Jenkins won for original screenplay for THE SAVAGES.

Marion Cotillard’s transformation is awe-inspiring. If you see her in JEUX D’ENFANTS, A GOOD YEAR (with Russell Crowe) and as the vengeful assassin in A VERY LONG ENGAGEMENT, you will see what I mean. I believe she was also one of the teachers in Lucile Hadzihalilovic’s criminally underrated INNOCENCE. I love this film.

  3. Bill McAlpine says:

Congratulations to both Moen and Bob on your fruitful Oscar picks, nice work guys!
I didn’t make any real predictions and wasn’t too upset about any of the winners…I’m just glad the ‘Juno’ didn’t win big.

Moen, I can’t believe that you didn’t pick Marion Cotillard for Best Actress, especially after listening to your endless praising of her performance last year. I even went to see it just because of your praise!

The Oscar show was fun but once again for the second year in a row, the show was ruined by CTV’s horribly zoomed in picture (to eliminate the permanent ABC logo on the left side of the screen), making a complete shambles of all the on-screen text and movie clips…it was painful to watch.
Someone should lodge a complaint with the CRTC over this practice.

  4. Bob Turnbull says:

Cotillard was in “Innocence”? Wow, I don’t remember that…I do agree that was a lovely film.

Thanks for that piece of info about the zoomed in picture Bill. Yes, that was indeed awful. I thought my friend had screwed up his projector’s settings, but then we noticed that the CTV logo was in the right spot. That’s bordering on criminal…I mean, here’s a broadcast that is supposedly celebrating film and they do a pan and scan on it. Geezus.
